Interviewing Winners of the ¡®K-eyewear Design Awards¡¯
Receiving the award Provide to Photo: Moonsoo Park, Jungwook Choi
Certificate of award Provide to Photo: Moonsoo Park, Jungwook Choi
On December 12, 2023,
our school¡¯s students named
Jungwook Choi (Department
of Universal Art and Design¡¤3)
and Moonsoo Park (Department
of Universal Art and Design¡¤4)
won the grand prize at the
K-Eyewear Design Awards.
1. What is your motivation that made you participate in this award?
Jungwook: I had transferred
to our school last semester, so
I was looking for a contest to
participate in. During searching
for a contest, I did some
volunteer works managing 3D
printer and took a class about
3D printing which was taught
by Professor Dong-ik Sin. While
I was doing volunteer work,
Professor Sin recommended
this contest for me to join
in, and Moonsoo, who was
my colleague that was doing
volunteer work together, was
recommended too. As a result,
I decided to participate in this
contest with Moonsoo.
Moonsoo: I usually participate in
many contests, and this was one
of them. It was recommended
by Professor Sin, and first, I
was going to participate alone.
However, since there were only
2 weeks left until submission,
so I decided to participate with
another student. At that time,
I got to know my colleague,
Jungwook, while volunteering
managing 3D printer. As a result,
I recommended this contest to
him and participated together.
2. Which feature did you consider the most when making the product to submit? Please give specific information about your product.
Moonsoo: While we participated
in the contest, its theme was
¡®An eyewear design for the next
generation¡¯. We predicted that
3D printer will become popular
in the future, we thought of
designing product that could
decorate glasses using a 3D
printer.
Jungwook: The first idea that
we consider was to make glasses
possible to detach freely, so we
can use it as a face accessary.
However, while receiving some
advice from Professor Sin, we
came up with a new idea on
attaching some small deco on
the glasses like decorating things
on the crocs. It was based on the
expectation that there will be lots
of people who are interested in fashion in the future generation.
3. What did you consider the most while you prepared for the contest?
Moonsoo: I thought that
even if the design came out
well, it would be no use if it
wasn¡¯t interested to the judges.
Therefore, I was concentrated
about construction. I also
changed design three times.
I think I tried hard to submit
the product in 2 weeks, also
considering the professor¡¯s
advice.
Jungwook: If the hole where the
accessories go into was clunky,
it wouldn¡¯t do job since it was
not pretty. Also, it was hard to
match standard, too. Therefore,
I made a lot of concentration on
the design.
4. Could you tell me how you felt while participating in the contest?
Jungwook: Actually, it wasn¡¯t
very long since I have started to
study about 3D printing. So, I
thought that it would be difficult
to make accessories at first, but
surprisingly, I feel that it was
easy, and I was able to enjoy it
more. I also thought that I want
to study about 3D printing more
deeply. Moreover, it was happy
to hear from our professor, who
had watched over our product,
told that we will get a prize, and
hear from Moonsoo that we won a grand prize at the contest.
Moonsoo: I didn¡¯t think it was
hard, or tiring to prepare for the
contest since the design of the
product was made by myself
with various advice, and got
a good result, which was very
meaningful to me. It was my
first contest that I won ever since
I started to participate in many
contests. Especially, I originally
chose product designing as my
career, it was memorable to have
faith in me.
5. Since you two got a good grade in the contest, could you tell me the next phase that you decided?
Jungwook: My career was
related to graphic originally.
Therefore, I want to study about
UI & UX design and product
more. Also I hope to choose
my career between graphic and
product areas.
Moonsoo: I hoped to work at
product area before I decided
to participate in this contest.
Also, I became a senior this
year, so I want to design about
specific things that are related to
my career. Moreover, I want to
participate more contests to get
a various experience. It would
be nice to join in many external
activities.

Dopamine Poisoning
The term "dopamine addiction" is sweeping
social media. On social media platforms
like X (formerly Twitter) or Instagram,
it's common to see the term "dopamine
addiction" being used as a meme.
Dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters
in the brain that makes us feel happy
and pleased when we get what we want.
Dopamine can help you feel motivated and
rewarded. However, when we have too
much dopamine, our brains become less
sensitive to it which cause problems. This is
where dopamine addiction comes in.
Anna Lemki, author of Dopamine Nation and professor of psychiatry and addiction
medicine at Stanford University School of
Medicine, suggests a way of restraining
yourself and facing your pain. She explains
that both pleasure and pain are processed
in the same part of the brain, and if the scales are tipped in favor of pleasure, the
brain will always try to bring them back
to equilibrium. So, if you enjoy pleasure
without moderation, you'll experience more
pain. The key to prevention, she says, is to
do things that make you less vulnerable to
pain and more able to feel pleasure.
Try a "dopamine detox," which is a way
to give your body just the right amount of
discomfort and pain to trigger the release of
neurotransmitters that produce refreshing
pleasures.

The ¡®Parent Fee¡¯ Increased
Mother and her baby Photo: Unsplash
¡®Parent Fee¡¯ is the amount of money that
is given to parents who raise their children
under 0 years of age. It initially started in
2023, leading by recent government of
Korea. At first, the fee was given 700,000
won per month to parents who raise
children under 0 years of age, and 350,000
won per month to parents who take care
of children under 1 years of age. However,
according to ministry of health and welfare,
they will pay 1,000,000 won per month to
the former case, and 500,000 won to the
latter from January 2024. It is the first cash
welfare system in the history of policies that
is related to children¡¯s welfare.
As for applying, parents can apply by
visiting the administrative welfare center
where they live or apply online through
related websites such as Government 24. It
is also possible to apply through the ¡®Happy
Birth One-Stop¡¯ service. Our government is
expecting that this policy will help Korea¡¯s
situation which its birth rate of children is
descending.
However, there are some negative opinions
too. According to the Korea Social Security
Information Institute, based on data from
the Korea¡¯s national statistical office, the
budget for Parent Fee takes 4.8 trillion won
per year as of 2020. This budget accounts
for 4.6% of the ministry of health and
welfare budget as of 2022. In addition,
there might be a controversy over fairness
because parents who raise children over 2
years of age do not receive any benefits.
To sum up, there are both advantage and
disadvantage in Parent Fee. However, if
people gathered its features and modified
this policy, someday, parents can obtain
much better one.

Choose to Stay Single
In the past, marriage was essential to
life. Getting married, having children, and
starting a family were considered important.
Recently, however, an increasing number of
young people consider individual happiness
more important than making a family. It's
not that they can't get married, but "staying
single" without getting married has become
a trend for people in their 20s and 30s.
Q. What do you think is the cause of choosing to stay single in society?
Eunji(Global Culture¡¤4): Unlike wedding
entertainment shows such as "We Got
Married," which were popular in the past, it
is known that people can enjoy themselves
alone enough like "I Live Alone," and
people do not feel the need for marriage
much. Also, the cost of getting married is
burdened by the infinite rise in housing
prices.
Subeen(Global Culture¡¤3): As prices
soared economically, there was a burden,
and the benefits of marriage or having
children are not helpful. In conclusion, I
think that 'Choose to stay single' was created
as the desire to live alone while enjoying
what they liked gradually began to be lined
up.
Soyeon(Global Management¡¤3): They
don't want to get married because of an
environment where it is difficult to raise
children, such as rising prices, the gap
between the rich and the poor, and parental
leave that is not easy to use.
Q. Do you want to stay single? And why?
Eunji(Global Culture¡¤4): Yes, the social
responsibilities and restrictions that arise
when marrying economic reasons are too
much.
Subeen(Global Culture¡¤3): No, I think
that the happiness and fruits gained through
marriage with loved ones are important and
that people cannot live alone.
Soyeon(Global Management¡¤3): Yes,
even if I get married, there is no guarantee
that I can live a better life than now, and
even if I get married
and have children,
I don't want to raise
them insufficiently,
so I want to live
alone.

Online Illegal Ticket Trade
The dark side of tickets Photo: Pixabay
Illegal ticket trades are the illegal sale of
tickets, admission tickets, etc. at high prices,
and a person who sells tickets is called
a scalper. Ticket trades are particularly
problematic in the performance industry,
and singers are at war with scalpers as more performances increase at the beginning
of the year. Singer Jang Bum-joon was
scheduled to perform at a small theater in
Seoul 10 times from Jan. 3 to Feb. 1, but
canceled his entire concert reservation due to
a large number of illegal tickets. Singer Sung
Si-kyung, who is called "the illegal ticket
grim reaper" in the music industry, made
headlines by revealing on social media that
he caught a scalper himself in November last
year.
Since tickets are a type of negotiable
securities, transactions are bound to be
made easily, but purchasing and reselling
tickets that will not be used in an abnormal
way can be seen as an act of taking away
a fair purchase opportunity. This is the
fundamental reason why illegal ticket trades
are defined as illegal activities.
However, the level of punishment is weak
and the blind spot of the legal net is clear,
so it is not possible to strongly refrain from
indiscriminate illegal ticket transactions.
Officials in the performance industry
voiced the need to strengthen punishment
for scalpers, pointing out that strengthening
government-level punishment, developing
scalpers response technology, and
improving consumer awareness are all
necessary.

I remember the first time I had
to take over an acquisition and
had to work hard to edit it all by
myself. Although I wasn¡¯t good
at it, it seemed like I tried my
best and edited it with passion
every moment. As I get used to
my duties and feel that editing
time is getting shorter and shorter,
new reporters come in and I¡¯ve
realized it's time to step back.
Even when I return to second
semester of first year, I would
have continued to support Hakbo.
It would be a lie if everything
was positive, but I don't regret the
experience because it gave me a
useful enlightenment. The sense
of mission I had as a reporter
and the sense of responsibility
I had as editor-in-chief over the
past two and a half years was a great experience for me, and will
remain a fond memory for me in
the future. I would like to express
my gratitude to the English

who followed me. I will always
support the development and
progress of Hakbo even when I
leave the team.
