The event for the second semester of 2023 featured presentations and panel discussions under the theme of "Creating and disseminating integrated welfare services in smart cities using new ICT technologies." KNU¡¯s Student Exchange Program The term ¡®exchange student¡¯ refers to a system in which semesters and credits completed are recognized by the main school for the purpose of obtaining credits for one or two semesters from overseas sister universities. In these programs, student exchange agreements have been negotiated and signed. Students can expand their knowledge and develop their ability to understand other cultures through exchange student programs. The credits obtained from sister schools are recognized as the main school, and if the tuition fee is paid to the main school, the tuition fee for the other school is exempted. Some benefits of exchange programs are learning new cultures and lifestyle habits and making friends with people from other countries. The exchange student program is well established in our school. Typically, the dispatched universities consist of Charleston Southern University in the United States, Edge Hill University in the United Kingdom, Chuo University in Japan, Yantai University in China, Russian State Social University in Russia, Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Germany, King's University College in Canada, and AI-Farabi Kazakh National University in Kazakhstan. In order become an exchange student, common qualifications must be met, such as completing at least one year (transfer students should have at least one completed semester), not including the final semester of graduation in the dispatch period. Information on recruiting exchange students can be viewed in detail on the school website, and useful information can be obtained by joining the Naver cafe "Kangnam University Exchange Student Group." Furthermore, to visit and discuss the program in person, you can visit the respective office on the first floor of the main building or call 031.280.3422 to get more information. Sobin Lee dlthqls3103@gmail.com No Zone No-kids zones and No-senior zones are a controversial social issue that's been heavily debated lately. A no-kids zone is a place where infants and children are not allowed to enter, and a no-senior zone is a place where people over the age of 60 are not allowed to enter. This phenomenon is increasing in some cafes and restaurants. No zone's adoption was sparked by a food court child burn incident in 2012. After a court ruled that the owner had to pay more than 30,000 dollars in compensation, many restaurants began refusing to allow children to enter. Many places that do not accept seniors because they feel uncomfortable with certain behaviors or attitudes of seniors, such as belittling the staff. The more mature citizenship is needed for parents and elderly people who behave badly. Also, in the case of no-kids zones, it is not appropriate to put the blame for negligence on the owner if a child caused a problem in the business. Parents who allowed the problem to happen should also be held accountable. Yerim Jeong jy898119@naver.com Kangnam Hakbo In Instagram! @knu_ press

2 Kangnam University Newspaper December 06, 2023 No. 384 The Kangnam Hakbo Campus Smoking Issues On Every Time, a community app for college students, students often post problems related to smoking. As it is a continuing problem, I conducted a survey for two weeks to get students' opinions on smoking on campus. We posted the survey on Every Time and on our SNS accounts. 80% of the participants were non-smokers and 20% were smokers. When asked, "As a non-smoker, have you ever experienced any smoking-related inconveniences?" the answer was a unanimous, "Yes." The same was true for smokers, with all but one saying they had been inconvenienced. Both nonsmokers and smokers chose the smell of cigarette smoke as the most common inconvenience. In particular, nonsmokers also cited the problem of second-hand smoking from open smoking areas with no partitions. Smokers, on the other hand, pointed out the lack of accessibility of smoking areas. When asked about their own uncomfortable experiences outside of the suggested options, nonsmokers said things like, "Smokers spit everywhere," "It makes my head hurt to be in a closed space with them," and "I've seen them smoke in non-smoking areas. On the other hand, "I just smoke during breaks and before class. But posts keep coming up on Every Time saying it smells like cigarettes. Why don't you make a smoking seat in the classroom?¡± smokers said. Smokers are just as uncomfortable with smoking on campus as non-smokers, and there are about eight designated smoking areas on campus. They are located next to the street or right near the entrance. However, none of the smoking booths are shielded from smoke and odor, and non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke suffer. It is important to observe smoking etiquette that does not smoke in a non-smoking section or spit anywhere. Yerim Jeong jy898119@naver.com Culture The 7th "Youth Day" Festival On Saturday, September 16, 2023, the 7th Korea Youth Day event was held at Yeouido Culture Park in Seoul. This event has been running for seven years since 2016. Youth Day is a legal anniversary established to promote the importance of guaranteeing young people's rights and youth development and raising interest in youth issues. To commemorate these anniversaries, the Youth Day event created a space for young people to take the lead and challenge the future. In addition, it has various meanings and purposes such as the youth-led declaration of the carbon-neutral era and leading and practicing ESG culture. The event started at 10 a.m. the start of the event was announced by a flash mob to pray for attracting the 2030 World Expo. Since then, there have been various programs such as overseas youth quiz competitions, youth cheerleading championships, Youth Day celebrations, creator awards, and K-pop concerts. Many public relations exhibition hall booths were found once you enter the venue. The booth was part of a participatory festival format in by which your stamped different activities on a bingo board. Since the Youth Day event is on the third Saturday of September every year, there¡¯s always hope that more people would be able to participate and celebrate during it. Yunseo Kim yunseolindakim@gmail.com How to Promote KPOP KPOP refers to Korean pop music that is popular overseas. The longevity of its sound and culture has long surpassed what most would consider a fad and has established itself as a vibrant trend in the world of entertainment and music. Therefore, among those trends, there are various marketing strategies that Korean idols are using. First, there are Pop-up stores. A Pop-up store typically means a temporary facility that is created to advertise rare goods through surprise marketing. The idol industry is not an exception to this trend. For example, when classifying references to pop-up stores operated by The Hyundai Seoul from February 2021 to 2022 by type, approximately 48% were related to idol pop-up stores. (The Hyundai Seoul, 2022) In another example, in a pop-up store that ran from Oct. 4 through Oct. 9, with the purpose of advertising the group Seventeen¡¯s new songs, a total of 100,000 people had visited it. (Kim So Yun, 2023)To advertise their new songs, there are social media ¡°challenges¡± too. When TikTok and YouTube short forms became more popular, certain activities called ¡®challenges¡¯ became famous, too. Idol filmed and uploaded short videos of themselves dancing to the choreography of their new songs with other idols, or artists. Its advertising effect can be clearly seen, as their fans participate in the challenges together. The fact that Korean artist Zico's ¡®Any Song¡¯, stayed at the top of the music charts for about a week after its release in 2020, is largely due to the challenge promotion effect on TikTok. (Min Kyung One, 2020) Idols maintain their place among numerous trends by marketing their songs with unique methods. In the era of fast-passing trends, they set up a long-lasting plan for sustainability. As a result, it is not an exaggeration that we are enjoying K-pop culture through the many marketing methods that idols are showing to us. Yoonseo Jung judybest@naver.com

The Kangnam Hakbo December 06, 2023 No. 384 Kangnam University Newspaper 3 Is a Disposable Cup Deposit System Best? The disposable cup deposit system is a system in which a 300won deposit is received from consumers when coffee or beverages are sold in disposable cups, and the deposit is returned when the cup is returned. The aim is to increase the recycling rate of disposable cups and reduce the amount used. The system was implemented first in Jeju and Sejong in early December last year, and will be expanded nationwide in 2025. Recently, however, the Ministry of the Environment has changed its stance from ¡®nationwide enforcement¡¯ to ¡®autonomous enforcement by local governments.¡¯ This means that there is virtually no regulation. This system will be applied in a limited manner only to ¡°member businesses with 100 or more stores that sell coffee and other beverages.¡± And as of June 30th of this year, the cups that entered the disposable cup intermediate compression facilities in Jeju and Sejong weighed approximately 17,770 kg, of which only 30%, or 5,450 kg, was recycled, and the rest remained in the compression facilities. Moreover, the most fundamental problem is that the deposit does not have a significant effect on actual single-use items and plastic 'reduction'. The core of reducing disposable items is ¡°not using them.¡± However, the purpose of the deposit system is to collect and recycle low-quality plastic, and it cannot reduce the amount of disposable items used. Jang Yong-cheol, professor of environmental engineering at Chungnam University, pointed out, ¡°This system is a recycling and reuse policy that is at the lowest level of resource circulation policy. In order to fundamentally reduce the amount of disposable cups used, policies such as banning and restricting the use of disposable cups, prohibiting the provision of free cups, and supporting expanded use of multi-disposable cups must be implemented in parallel.¡± The top priority should not be to implement the security deposit system nationwide, but rather to ¡°eject disposable items.'¡± From now on, the Ministry of Environment will have to come up with essential measures. Subin Jung popnew234@naver.com International The African Union in the Spotlight At the G20 summit in New Delhi, India, which lasted from September 9 to 10, the African Union was confirmed to be a full member of the G20. It is the second time the union has joined G20 since the European Union. The influence of the African Union is growing in many places. 1.Climate, potential for undeveloped renewable energy and abundant natural assets First, it shows its influence on the climate sector. Africa has large land and a large population and has the youngest labor force in the world. It also has the potential for undeveloped renewable energy and abundant natural assets. For this reason, Africa has both potential and ambition to become the center of global solutions to climate change. Kenyan President William Ruto also stressed that Africa is in an advantageous position to escape carbon-emitting fossil fuels. There are countries that already know this potential and have invested. The United Arab Emirates has announced it will invest $4.5 billion to develop clean energy in Africa. 2. Economy The Global South, which has developing countries such as India and Brazil in the southern hemisphere, is increasing its presence during the new Cold War. As mentioned above, Africa has the world's youngest labor force and abundant natural resources, and companies are increasing their investment. As it is the current era of the New Cold War, whether Africa will stand on the side of China and Russia or the United States seems to be the key. Yunseo Kim yunseolindakim@gmail.com U.S.-China Punitive Panda Diplomacy Recently, with the analysis that relations between the United States and China have seemingly deteriorated, the term "Punitive Panda Diplomacy" has begun to emerge. As pandas are returned to China one after another. This may lead to a possibility that there will be no pandas in the United States from the end of next year. China is implementing "Panda Diplomacy" to lend pandas as a sign of friendship to countries that have established diplomatic relations. In 1972, a pair of male and female pandas gifted to then U.S. President Richard Nixon shortly after his visit to China gained particular attention. Since then, pandas have become a symbol of friendship between the United States and China, and have been loved by zoos and citizens in the United States for their huge interest. According to the Associated Press, there are currently seven giant pandas in the United States, and three at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, D.C., will return to China in December this year due to the end of their lease. When the pandas in Washington, D.C. return to China, there will be only four pandas left in the U.S. at the Atlanta Zoo in Georgia. Furthermore, the pandas will were to be leased until 2024, will return to China by the end of next year, and there is no news yet that China will send new pandas to the United States. Relations between the two countries deteriorated as the U.S. imposed high intensity checks on China's exports of high-tech technologies. Dace Wilder, a senior researcher at Georgetown University in the U.S., pointed out to the Associated Press that China's panda lease has also ended in other Western countries such as Scotland and Australia, calling it a "Punitive Panda Diplomacy". 4 Kangnam University Newspaper December 06, 2023 No. 384 The Kangnam Hakbo Column Seoul is Not Korea I¡¯ve found that after living in Korea for more than 4 years and visiting the cities that are well known among tourists and Koreans alike like Seoul and Busan, I¡¯ve discovered that visiting less popular or unknown cities has been the better experience. After I have visited places like Gangnam, Seoul, and Busan etc. I started searching for other places which were not and exhibit more than a typical high building, contain more of nature and a chance to learn a bit more about Korean culture. During my research I found cities like Daegu, Daejon, Wonju, Namhae, Danyang, Yeosu and Jeonju. Jeonju was a very culturally rich travel destination in which I learned about its history and participated in cultural activities. The activity I enjoyed the most there was learning a kind of dance with a flag while listening to the percussive rhythm of the drums. The second location I enjoyed the most was Namhae. I would dare to describe this place as the kind of place that exhibits beauty, nature, scarce buildings, beautiful views, and truly kind people. I recommend going to Darangyi village which hosts a very amazing view and healthy meals there since they cook the food is organic that they plant themselves. I enjoyed riding my motorcycle around Namhae the most. In my opinion, the best place in Korea was Danyang. I have visited this destination three times, there you can do many kinds of activities from paragliding, visiting a cave, and rafting. There is even a shooting range if you have never experienced firing a gun. I hope you feel encouraged to visit these ¡®undiscovered ¡¯kinds of places not very known. When we challenge ourselves to do something different, we can throw ourselves into an adventure where we can make good memories. Watch Out for Tanghulu! There is a current confectionary trend that consists of a sweet, delicious fruit. The dessert¡¯s name, is Tanghulu. Tanghulu is a dessert that from China, which was originally made of fruit of hawthorn and sugar. These days, this dessert becomes much more popular than before by showing many different varities. However, there are some people who are worried about this popularity. According to status of students with pediatric diabetes of 17 offices of education that ministry of education submitted to the congress, pediatric diabetes patients are counted to 3,855 in April 2023. This might be very serious situation, since the number of patients were 3,111 in 2021, it has been increased 23.9% in 2 years. (Ji Won Nam, 2023) It is not healthy to eat desserts excessively and not exercise, especially for students who attach importance to their study life, rather than their exercise. This should be considered serious, since Tanghulu's surface is with melted sugar. It could cause not only diabetes, but obesity and cavities. Also, due to the trend there have been dangerous situations documented when people tried to make it in their homes. The sugar, which is essential ingredient for making Tanghulu, is hard to melt because its melting point is 85 degrees Celsius. Moreover, after it melts, it becomes gluey, which can cause even bigger burns if people don¡¯t pay attention well. This sweet and delicious dessert can cause unwarranted harm on your health. Notwithstanding, it is not logical to assert that only Tanghulu is bad for your health. However, this dessert has the potential to be harmful to people¡¯s health. We should be careful as we eat various foods, and endeavor to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy foods. I hope that Tanghulu¡¯s popularity will calm down, so that people can adopt healthier eating habits. Pay Attention to India Currently, the Indian economy is booming and the outlook is improving. Reuters reported ¡°IMF recently released its October 2023 World Economic Outlook (WEO) report, which upwardly revised India's economic growth forecast for the current fiscal year from 6.1% to 6.3%.¡± The IMF said, ¡°India's growth rate is expected to remain strong at 6.3% in both 2023 and 2024.¡± As the hegemony war and trade conflict between the US and China intensifies, global companies are leaving China and moving to India. Until now, Apple has only sold online, but as of April of this year it opened Apple Stores in New Delhi and Mumbai, drawing attention when Apple's CEO visited in person at the opening ceremony. The Indian economy has been growing rapidly and the number of newly wealthier people was increasing, which has made India attractive to prospective companies. In particular, unlike China, India's young population (productive population) is steadily increasing, and these low labor costs have had a positive effect on companies faced with the issue of cost reduction. Also, India has over 70 million English users, which may be more advantageous for global companies. Furthermore, attention should be paid to the potential of India, which is showing remarkable growth in many areas of the IT services industry, energy industry (particularly the oil refining industry), and financial industry.
