Kangnam Hakbo In Instagram! @knu_press The WBC Returns After 6 Years The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is an international baseball tournament that has been held every four years since 2006. The 5th WBC will be held on March 8, 2023, six years after 2017 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. It consists of four groups: A, B, C, and D, and hosts the United States (Arizona, Florida) and Japan (Tokyo). The group stage will be held in Taiwan (Taichung). The groupings are as follows. Group A: Taiwan, The Netherlands, Cuba, Italy, Panama / Group B: Korea, Japan, Australia, China, Czech Republic / Group C: the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Canada, United Kingdom / Group D: Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Israel, and Nicaragua. The first and second places in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. There are two main points to watch in this game. The first is that players can be transferred according to the pool of players in countries with professional leagues, the pool of players in countries other than those in countries, and regardless of nationality. The Czech Republic is a team without a professional league, but a firefighter who loved baseball so much also played as a baseball player and gave the Czech Republic its first ticket to the WBC finals. South Korea has so far as recruited Korean national players to form the national team, but this time it has selected a Korean- American player for the first time. The second is the Korea-Japan match. In the 2015 Premier 12 Korea-Japan match, South Korea was blocked by Shohei Ohtani and failed to score, but from the eighth inning, it won a big come-from-behind victory over Japan with a fiery lineup. 2 Kangnam University Newspaper March 01, 2023 No. 381 Building Relationships Aristotle was a Greek philosopher who once stated that having friends through life is one the components needed to achieve Eudaemonia, which means "happiness" in the Greek language. I agree with him since adjacent to animals, we are able to communicate through language and living in communities since thousands of years ago. Is very important to be socially open and to know how to deal with people and how to communicate because we need this skill either in our workplace, with our family and friends, or to find solutions to any problems. Due to the need and importance of learning this skill, l’d like to introduce a book named "How to Win Friend and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. This is a book that is not only going to help you with making new friends, but also how to build relationships with practically anyone such as your teachers, potential business partners, or anyone else you encounter on a daily basis. In this book, Dale Carnegie teaches us the rules and steps to follow in order to be able to influence people and be a successful person in the relationships based on his own experiences with family, friends, and business partnerships. These steps are divided into three sections: being a friendly person, making other people think like you, and being a leader. Each section has its own steps in order to successfully achieve the statement. In my opinion, the most important steps are: not criticizing or condemning others, show genuine and sincere admiration, smile at them, talk and ask questions about others interests and be a good listener. In the second section “make other people think like you” the most relevant steps are: avoiding any disputes, and not to point out a person’s mistake in public. Furthermore, if you make a mistake you should own up to it. Showing sympathy for another person’s ideas and being able to challenge those ideas without discouraging is equally important. Last but not least, acknowledge your own mistakes before criticizing others’, ask questions instead of giving orders when you need something, and warmly give compliments to any progress, no matter how small. As soon as I put these steps into practice, I saw good results. Some of this advice may be difficult to understand or execute in real life, so I recommend you read the book. In reading, you will realize how many ways you implement what you’ve read and learned from the author’s experiences. To paraphrase a quote from the author regarding smiling, there is no virus more contagious than a smile (Carnegie, 1936). As a person who deals with serving people, from the first moment I started smiling to customers, they began to be friendlier to me; asking me what my name is, where I come from, etc. What I really enjoyed about this book is how practical it is and how Dale Carnegie expresses his experiences applying these rules and the fruit of his results. I think the practicality and anecdotes given by the author are the two elements that are the most important to help master these skills. This book contains many examples that you can use and apply to your relationship with the people around you. This drama is about Moon Dong Eun, whose life was disrupted by school violence in high school, preparing her 18-year revenge on the perpetrators. The material of school violence has been steadily mentioned, but the reason why it ranked first in the Netflix non-English speaking category worldwide is that in reality, it is difficult for the victim to overcome the trauma and take revenge. The scene in which Dong Eun’s arms and legs got burnt by a curling iron was particularly shocking to the viewers. In Cheongju, a female student was severely harassed and bullied by three third-year junior middle school students. Some of the incidents involved burning her arm with a hair iron, and group beatings. Photo: MBC But experts in education say the real-life situations are even more dire. January 6, 2023, a 13-year- old elementary school student sexually harassed a 9-year-old girl by making a bed out of snow. The girl was unable to live a normal life due to the impact of the incident. But the perpetrator was not punished because he was a child under the age of 13, and was not disciplined at school. There have been a spate of crimes committed by young teens taking advantage of the fact that they are not subject to criminal punishment. Juveniles offenders under the age of 10 to under 14 who commit crimes are tried without detention. Therefore, many believe it is necessary to revise the Juvenile Law in consideration of the case where the perpetrator commits a repeat offense in the process. Experts fear that new types of school violence could emerge after Covid. A social dimension of concern is needed so that students can learn the ability to self-regulate their emotions and how to deal with stress in problematic situations, and if someone commits a crime, there should be a fitting punishment. Standing by and acquiescing to crimes, and refusing to punish them adequately does nothing but set an example that the rule of law is not properly observed and furthermore, increase the potential of violent student crime. March 01, 2023 No. 381 Kangnam University Newspaper 3 Long Live Korea's Independence Around the world, February 14th is celebrated as the day of love, also known as St. Valentine’s Day. For South Korea, February 14th holds a different historical significance. In 1910, this day also marked the day that the South Korean patriot An Jung-Geun was sentenced to death. In 1905, Japan concluded the Eulsa Treaty with Korea, and along with this, established a post held by a Japanese citizen in South Korea known as the residency general. This treaty deprived South Korea of its diplomatic powers and eliminated all sovereignty over it's legislative, judicial, and administrative powers. An Jung-geun, who strongly opposed the limitations of this treaty, decided to defect overseas and start an armed independence movement. On March 2nd, 1909, 12 comrades gathered and formed an alliance called the "Donguidanjihoe", in which every member cut off their left ring finger to draft the independence of Korea in blood. Then, An Jung-Geun and Eom In-Seop vowed to assassinate a key figure in the residency, Itou Hirobumi. On October 26, 1909, in Harbin, An Jung-gun shot at Itou Hirobumi. Itou Hirobumi died instantly, and An was arrested at the scene of the crime. Japan sent this incident, which was under the authority of Russia, to the Japanese Consulate General, and sent him to Lushun, which was under the jurisdiction of Japan, while ignoring all international laws and procedures. During the trial, An Jung-geun claimed a total of 15 crimes committed by Itou Hirobumi. The crime murder of Empress Myeongseong, massacres of innocent Koreans, disbandment of the army and interfere of education by banning Koreans from studying abroad. An continued the silent war with Japan until the end. After his execution, Japan, fearing that An's cemetery would become a base for the anti-Japanese movement, refused his corpse to Korea, and buried his body in the surrounding mountains instead. Recently, I went to the An Jung-geun’s Memorial Hall. The address is 91 Sowol-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul. I feel that everything we enjoy now should not be taken for granted. The peace and freedom we enjoy today is only possible because of their sacrifice and we can keep their spirits alive by remember history and their contribution to South Korea. SUBIN JUNG popnew234@naver.com The Marine Environment in Avatar 2 "Avatar 2" is a movie that has gained considerable popularity, with more than 10 million cumulative audiences in Korea alone. Avatar 2 is a sequel to Avatar 1, which was released in 2009. To summarize the Avatar 2 storyline, Jake Sully protects his family from human aggression. During the conflict with mankind, he emphasized the love of family and gave a calm impression. In the movie, it is easy to see that the Metcaina tribe values marine animals as much as their families. In the movie, humans arrive on the planet Pandora and destroy nature thinking only of their interests, hunting and exploiting marine life in particular. I thought of all the images humans were damaging on the planet Pandora and how they were consistent with how we treat the Earth today. James Cameron, the director of the film, said it ontains the themes of marine conservation and the responsibility of protecting the sea, which mankind does not yet have enough of. Director James Cameron is also well known for criticizing the abuse and misuse of advanced technology throughout the film. Currently, marine pollution is a serious situation. The deepest part of the Mariana Trench is said to be up to 11km, which people call the unknown, and on May 13, a Japanese research institute announced that it had traces of plastic waste in a deeper part of the trench. This was determined by combining data collected from wireless sensors. This is just one of many examples that marine pollution is becoming severe, and the animals and plants that reside in the sea are also in danger. Like the lesson in Avatar 2, we should think of nature as a part of our family and value it in the same way we do our physical families. This will not only create awareness for the marine environment, but will also extend to our entire planet as we value the world around us.
