2 Kangnam University Newspaper December 07, 2022 No. 380 The Kangnam Hakbo Today for You, Tomorrow for Me By CARLOS JULIO Helping is a natural human response, and as humans we are capable to communicate with each other and collaborate as a community. When I was thinking about the title for my article, this expression came to my mind ¡°Today for you, Tomorrow for me¡± which means maybe today you are the one who needs my help, and perhaps tomorrow it is I who will need yours. This statement is, in a way, calling up us to live helping each other which will lead to the embitterment of society. To expound further, during one class one student was doing a presentation and when he finished another student proceeded to ask him a follow up question. After the student asked the initial question, the class¡¯s professor intervened to help the presenter understand the question better as he was hearing impaired. Before this happened, I hadn¡¯t noticed he was wearing a device in his ears that aides him in listening better, and it set off a flurry of reflective thoughts. Usually we are so concerned about the ongoings in our daily lives and have become very self -centric with our phones or other devices, that we actually miss opportunities and situations where there can be somebody that needs help and we are unable to provide it due to the distractions. In order more aware of these kinds of situations I asked this student for an interview to gain more clarity about his daily life, his struggles and how it affects him. I also wanted to learn from him as to how we can help not only him but others who may have similar or other disabilities. He mentioned that he had started having hearing difficulties since middle school and during that time he became used to receiving help from others without shame in doing so. He also mentioned that he has received emails from the disabled help center, which is in our university, and the emails he receives is to let him know professors can wear a transparent mask so he can see the professor¡¯s lips and understand the spoken lectures better. He went on to mention that he understands 90% of the class and didn¡¯t really require the professors to utilize it. However, he said that he usually has more problems listening to women¡¯s voices at times rather than men due to them being slightly more acute. I went on to ask him if he knew any other students with any disabilities at the university and he answered that this is his first semester and has not met any others who have any. This begs the question of how other students perceive their education and learning at the university, as well as the help they receive from others around them and from the faculty. I was very grateful to this student for giving me insight into his first year and some of the difficulties and thoughts surrounding his learning while having a disability. This was a wakeup call for me and hopefully for those reading to be more aware of the people around us, and to offer help when needed and when necessary. Simple is the Best By SUBIN JUNG We live in a flood of information, with less ability to think for ourselves. If the space you¡¯re staying in is neatly organized and you enter a space with white walls that don't give you any information, then you will be able to find your information subjectively. In this way, minimalism is in the spotlight even more in an information-overloaded society. Being simple is harder than being complicated, but it takes a lot of thought and effort to be simple. That's why short sentences are harder to write than long sentences. This is very essential, but simplicity consists only of what must be done, stripped of everything unnecessary as a result of maturity. Even simpler thoughts are the result of deeper thoughts, like the power to create the core of events, the power to distinguish between doing first and doing later. It's worth asking the question, "What didn't I need today?" Because in the process of asking, you can wonder what is the most important thing in life. Applying to conversation, it is better to listen or be silent than simply to have more words. Raffaello Sanzio said, "If you become wise, ask in context, listen carefully and answer calmly. And if you have nothing to say, learn to be silent.¡± Thinking and speaking simply gives more power than empty words. If you have friend who have a difficult situation, it is wise to think of words that will help the situation and speak briefly rather than talking at length about one's own experiences. Let's look at another simplification example. Facebook Chairman Mark Zuckerberg, sticks to a simple style, not only in his work, but also in his clothes. Also, Steve Jobs wanted to focus on the product, so he minimized all other non-essential stuff. It turns out that the simpler things are, the easier they can focus on themselves. The goal was not simply to reduce things, but to focus on what was important. Minimalists are people who know what they need, and who reduce things for the things that are important to them. Based on Steve Jobs' values, Apple pursues simplicity. The way Apple was organized, with its new product development, advertising, Apple store displays, everything he looked at was based on simplicity. Ken Segall, who worked with Jobs for more than 12 years at Apple and NeXT said that most of Jobs¡¯ comments, criticisms, and suggestions were based on simplicity. Also ¡°Jobs was able to succeed because he understood and embraced the importance of simplicity, and he was great at putting all the complication to one side.¡± he said. Simplicity benefits many areas such as inner strength, relationships, conversation, and business. Throw away unnecessary thoughts and leave only what matters most to myself. Also, we can leave only the necessary relationships without worrying about what will not happen. This is a surefire way that we can experience minimalism everywhere in our life. Simplicity has considerable power in a complex world.

The Kangnam Hakbo December 07, 2022 No. 380 Kangnam University Newspaper 3 MBTI: What¡¯s your Type? By YUNSEO KIM MBTI has gone viral in Korea these days. The popularity began to grow between 2019 and 2020. Even though MBTI has been around for 30 years, it wasn¡¯t something that was familiar to South Koreans. Now, it has become one of the latest trends in determining compatibility in South Korea. When people introduce themselves, their MBTI is one of the most significant parts. It shows almost everything about one¡¯s personality. There are 16 types of MBTI. It dictates your personality with four alphabets. It is formed with attentional focus (E/I), recognition feature (S/N), judgment function (T/F), and the way of life (P/J). E and I stand for ¡®E¡¯xtroversion and ¡®I¡¯ntroversion. People with E mostly receive energy by meeting people and interacting with others. On the other hand, people with I charge their energy by having their own time. S and N stand for Sense and intuition. People with S depend on their experience and their sense. They are more realistic types of people and focus on the tree, not the forest. N relies on intuition and inspiration. They are more idealistic type and value ideas, and abstracts. T and P stand for Thinking and Feeling. T considers the truth significantly, so they prefer if answers are right or wrong concisely. On the contrary, relationships are important for F and they prefer the answer ¡®good or bad. They like to empathize with others and believe that meaning, impact, and morality are important. Lastly, P and J stand for Judging and Perceiving. People with a ¡®P¡¯ lifestyle prefer fluid purpose and direction. They are comparably autonomous and flexible. Yet ¡®J¡¯ prefers distinct purpose and direction. Being systematic and planned is important for them. For they have a strict adherence to the deadline. It¡¯s better not to be too immersed in this. MBTI can explain a person¡¯s personality extremely well, but it does not show everything about them. For example, being an introverted person does not mean that they are always shy and quiet. Wise, being an extroverted person doesn't mean that they are always outgoing and talkative. Being a particular type does not necessarily equal that they are 100% that way. For instance, the percentage of F may be about 60 and T may be 40 percent. What M entails is to see is to find out which of the factors an individual has stronger characteristics in. Therefore, while it may shed some light on a few things about that person, it can be dangerous to judge one solely by their MBTI. There are many ways to check your MBTI. You can take the free test at 16personalities. com or a formal examination which costs money. When you take the 16personalities test, there are 93 questions to answer. It is free and doesn't take long, however, the accuracy isn¡¯t that high. The formal examination shows a more accurate personality type, but it is costly. Another option is taking the test for free at our school! It¡¯s easy to make the reservation for the test. Go to Kangnam University¡¯s Website and apply for personal counseling on the homepage¡¯s Mind Sharing Center. Make sure to book the test one day before! Eyes on the World By SUBIN JUNG When I first started reading economic articles, I couldn¡¯t understand the content of the articles due to some difficult terms and overall flow, but I wanted to know more about how the world will return, so I kept trying. Why should we read economic articles? First, it is possible to know the flow of the world by focusing on the economy. Consumers and investors cannot be compared, but their view of the market is clearly divided. To see the world from a new perspective, you can discover new opportunities. We have something to invest in that opportunity and we could be wealthy. Additionally, we can study pertinent topics related to the core of economy. Articles are selected for important content in what is happening in society. They present intriguing viewpoints, and the titles typically give us a head start in surmising the content of the entire article. This makes for a better and efficient read. Finally, we can get important investment information. In order to make investment decisions on our own, we must repeat the process of regularly acquiring information and going through our own thoughts. If we read economic articles, we can observe the market situation steadily and continuously get investment ideas. Notwithstanding, there are precautions that should be taken into consideration. As we can find many positives in economic articles, there are a negative ones as well. Economic articles can attract attention by focusing on negative news rather than positive news not unlike most media. For example, articles about whether a company has made a big mistake, whether an economic crisis is expected, or whether the exchange rate has risen further can vastly sway your pinions. It¡¯s important to make a conscious effort to regulate your emotions while reading and stay objective. Furthermore, there are times where articles do not seem to have any neutrality. Any article written by a reporter, with a goal of being as objectively as possible, could still appear biased to the reader. If a particular reporter's writing is too biased, read the writings of other reporters and other media next time. Conversely, if you find a gem of a reporter who writes useful articles for you, personally sponsoring or leaving a supportive comment is another good way to help further their writings and appear more often. It¡¯s wise to not make an investment decision based on just one piecemeal article. We should gain experience by reading multiple articles and observing stock price fluctuations in companies in which we invest. Here are 5 steps to developing a habit of reading economic articles: •Step 1. Read just the article title for 5 minutes each for 3-5 days. •Step 2. Peruse one article for 10 minutes each for 3-5 days. •Step 3. Understand and read the structure of one article for 15 minutes each for 3-5 days. •Step 4. Summarize one article a day. •Step 5. If you are somewhat familiar with summarizing articles, briefly summarize articles in various areas on a regular basis. For this reason, I often read to economic articles. I hope that you will also feel the need to actively expand your economic horizons and have new experiences through the five stages of developing habits described above.

4 Kangnam University Newspaper December 07, 2022 No. 380 The Kangnam Hakbo From Earth to Mars By HEEJUNG BAE Are you ready to immigrate if you have to leave Earth and move to Mars? Why should anyone migrate to Mars? A heavy deciding factor is the amount of pollution that exists on Earth. Recently, Earth¡¯s pollution and global warming issues are so serious, that ultimately it will lead to the destruction of our planet. Therefore, there have been suggestions for countermeasures to be pursued in the event that we may need to vacate Earth. Dr. Stephen Hawking once said that people have to ready to leave the Earth in order to avoid the extinction of mankind. He insisted that humanity may feel threatened by their chances for survival due for various reasons, including asteroid impacts, population explosions, environmental pollution, and nuclear war. He concluded that migration to Mars should be considered an alternative to these potential threats. Elon Musk, the ceo of Tesla also has agreed with the notion of sending people to Mars, and NASA and the non-profit organization Mars One are currently working on a project to reach this goal. So why Mars out of all of the other planets that exist? There are four reasons for this. First, Mars size is similar with the Earth. Secondly, it is not as much compared to the Earth, but there is air. Also, there are known traces of water that were found. Finally, it has a milder environment than other planets. In other words, Mars is the closest planet in the solar system to considerably be habitable environment. Is it possible to move out right now? Not likely. Although there is air on Mars, it does not have the same makeup as the air that exists on Earth. Mars¡¯s air is full of carbon dioxide and methane, so this would not be acceptable for respiration. Next, the pressure on Mars is different from the pressure on the Earth, and would be hard for humans to adjust without aid. Also, because there is no atmosphere, the daily temperature difference on Mars is varied, and the average temperature is 63 degrees below zero. Conclusively, it stands that we can¡¯t go to Mars now, but that hasn¡¯t stopped scientist from thinking of contingency plans just in case we may have to in the future. Origins of the Zodiac Signs: Orion and Scorpio By HEEJUNG BAE Zodiac sign is the name of mythical figures, animals, and objects that appear by connecting several stars. Orion¡¯s sign, is the most common representation of winter. There are two origins concerning Orion. Taken from Greek mythology, Orion was the human son of Poseidon, who was in love with Artemis, the goddess of hunting, and Apollon, Artemis' brother, disapproved of this. One day, Apollon went to the beach with Artemis, and he asked her if he could see a black dot on the sea. As she replied that she could in fact, see it, he asked again if he could shoot that very point with an arrow. She shot the point with an arrow, saying that was no problem, and then the man¡¯s scream rang out over the sea. The man¡¯s body was washed away by the waves which shocked Artemis as it came into view. The body belonged to Orion, the person she loved. Artemis was very distressed by the fact she killed her loved one with her own hands and persuaded her father, Zeus, to raise poor Orion to the sky and turn him into a constellation, which we know of as a zodiac. The other origin story is when Apollon tried to kill Orion by scorpion. When Artemis found out about this, she strongly protested, and Apollon stated that if Orion survives from the scorpion¡¯s needles he would no longer interfere in his life. Orion defeats the scorpion, but later died due to being poisoned by its stinger during the fight. Apollon made the scorpion that died by Orion¡¯s hand a constellation in the sky, which is where the zodiac sign Scorpio originated. Due to this myth, When Orion¡¯s constellation appears in the sky it prevents a scorpion from surfacing and remains in the ground in fear. The History of Wine By YUNSEO KIM Victor-Marie Hugo, writer of the novel 'Les Miserable' said, ¡°God created Water, but man created Wine.¡± Did you know that wine wasn¡¯t created by humans but was discovered? It is not yet exactly known when it started, but wine is one of the longest beloved drinks that is made from fruits. Interesting enough, a question that has always prevailed is why grapes instead of any other fruit? In order to make wine, the essential component needed is alcohol which comes from enzymes. Enzymes eat sugar and leave alcohol. Grapes have natural yeast in their shells, which is unusual. Grapes that fell on rocks naturally became wine and humans came across it by chance. Thousands of years ago, wine spread from Mesopotamian civilization through Egypt and Greece to ancient Rome. As Gaius Julius Caesar took over Europe with the Roman army, wine was introduced and subsequently produced in German, France, and other European countries. Wine was introduced in Korea during the Goryeo Dynasty. The first record is that King Chungnyeol of Goryeo drank wine from King Sejo of the Yuan Dynasty. There has been little to some interaction with wine beforehand, but after Korea opened itself to the public, the interest in wine increased. Someone once said that ¡°Wine is the first alcohol of mankind and it's developed with the history of mankind.¡± Wine has been long around us and from the looks of it will continue to be one of the oldest beloved drinks.

5 Kangnam University Newspaper December 07, 2022 No. 380 The Kangnam Hakbo A Jazzman¡¯s Blues: A Sweeping Tale of Forbidden Love By NAKAYIZA HOPE LETICIA PHOTO: NETFLIX When we think about love, we normally think about the butterflies and the good things surrounding it, but what if a love is forbidden? ¡°What happens there?¡± you might ask. Well, here is a forbidden love story. Set in 1940 in New Georgia, A Jazzman¡¯s Blues features a teenage romance between a black man, Bayou (Joshua Boone) who comes from an extended family of musicians, and a girl, Leanne (Solea Pfeiffer) who passes as Caucasian and is an outcast in the community because of her family history. Bayou and Leanne recognize in each other from the get-go, something wounded, and yet also sheltering. Due to disapproval from Leanne¡¯s family, their romance journey entails secret meetings. Their secret affection is however tipped over when Leanne¡¯s mother, Ethel (Lana Young) takes her daughter away to Boston after Bayou proses marriage. Bayou enrolls in the army and leaves Georgia as well. The romance is briefly rekindled when a war injury sends Bayou back home to his mother¡¯s juke joint. Leanne returns to Georgia as a newly wed to a descendant of the town¡¯s reigning family. The upsprung romance sends shivers through the Black community who knew about the lovers. Their urge to reconnect was dangerous because not only was Leanne married, but she was also married to a man very important in the white community. To escape the mob that wanted to lynch him because of his secret affair, Bayou is whisked off with Willie Earl, his brother and Willie's manager, Ira, to Chicago where he becomes an unexpected big musician. Despite his success, Bayou is unable to forget Leanne. When he learns that she's given birth to a baby that may be his son, he plans a one-night return to Georgia under the guise of returning to revive his mother¡¯s juke joint. Willie Earl, jealous of his brother's success, tips off the Sheriff, Leanne¡¯s brother-in-law that Bayou is back in town. Bayou is reunited with Leanne and their baby, but a mob lynches Bayou to the distress of Leanne and Bayou's family. This movie shows us how beautiful a love can be if it¡¯s allowed to blossom, and how fatal it can be when forbidden. Love always finds its way, but at what cost should that be? It also shows us the evolution of society from white supremacy and how grand the effects were for those who lived in the shadows. ¡®A Jazzman¡¯s Blues¡¯ springs up a lot of emotion. If emotion is what you look for in a movie, this one is a great pick! End of the Year Resolutions By PROF. LONNIE COLEMAN Many people often talk about New Year¡¯s resolutions at the end of the year. Often, we promise ourselves to be better, bigger, more productive than we were in previous years. However, a question that should be posed is, ¡°What accomplishments have I made during this year?¡± Instead of resolutions for the new year, I¡¯d like to suggest something different – reflections for the current year. We often reflect on our behavior or decisions on lots of things, but as a person, how often do you reflect on your accomplishments and give yourself opportunities to praise yourself? As university students, what are some small successes that you can attribute to yourself that you achieved this year? This is not vanity nor narcissism, but rather a good opportunity to observe just how far you¡¯ve come. In one of my classes, we have been talking about change as a good or bad thing. Change is constant, and we will always have to change and adapt to different situations in our lives. The kicker of it all, is that we can choose how we view the changes in our lives. The changes that caused struggles in your lives in the past or current year will be part of your testimony as you find solutions and move on to achieving your goals. Here are some ways that you can positively reflect on some of the changes and successes this year. If you are a first-year university student, ask yourself these questions: 1.Did I enjoy my first-year experience? Why or why not? 2.What have I learned about myself in this first year of university life? 3.Were there any experiences that I¡¯ve had in the first year that has changed how I look view myself or how I will act in the future? Perhaps you¡¯ve learned something new, made new friends, had some experiences that you¡¯ve never had before that has caused you to become more independent and take more control over your learning and social life. For current students (2nd and 3rd year), reflect and ask yourself these questions: 1.How has been my experience been this year, compared to when I first entered and last year? 2.Have I succeeded in any way with useful networking or improving my networking skills in preparation for my future? 3.Have I become more diligent in my study and preparation habits? 4.Have I learned more about myself and my focused area of study? Is it something that fits who I am as I have changed each year? Now that the newness is over, it¡¯s time to settle in. Did you adjust to your courses and new schedules? Have you had to alter your sleeping and waking times to achieve some of your personal goals? Perhaps you¡¯ve even learned that you¡¯re interested in another field of study, and you decide to change your courses. For senior students, these questions may help you reflect positively: 1.What were some of the biggest challenges I faced this year, and how did I overcome them? 2.What strengths have I developed from engaging with others in my college life? 3.How have I grown both academically and professionally? 4.Who have I met that has become an asset in preparing and planning for my future? The end is nigh, for your undergraduate studies, but it¡¯s only the beginning. Once you graduate, you have many decisions to make for yourself and your future. You are not the person you were when you entered university, and you¡¯ve most likely have met some incredible people along the way. Think about how you have prepared yourself and congratulate yourself for reaching one of many amazing accomplishments in your life. Resolutions and promises to do better are not terrible things, I wholeheartedly encourage them. However, we also need to get into the habit of being present with ourselves and acknowledging that we¡¯re doing fine and there¡¯s still room to improve, change, and grow. Good luck everyone and Happy New Year.
