Kangnam University Newspaper June 01, 2022 No. 378 2 The Kangnam Hakbo Why Analog is Attractive By SUBIN JUNG Analog vs Digital What scenes come to mind when you think of analog and digital? You can remember people who write letters carefully and communicate quickly using SNS, email, messenger, etc, or you might think of someone reading a paper book, or using an e-reader. Other examples could entail people who take out banknotes and coins and in contrast, people who payments at stores with Kakao pay or Samsung Pay on their smartphones. Perhaps most people tend to think of analog and digital as 'slow and sensitive vs. fast and convenient'. However, the basic concept of both lies in the difference in principles. Analog is continuous. Digital, on the other hand, is discontinuously processed only in two extreme forms, 0 and 1. For example, in cassette tapes, analog can be continuously duplicated and the quality can be degraded, while digital is represented by a discontinuous form of 0 and 1, and it can be expressed that there is almost no degradation. In other words, both digital and analog are both capable of being expressive, but in their own way. With the increasing use of the Internet, AI, and various types of technology, the world uses digital signals to express analog signals clearly and concisely. The charm of VINYL LP: A Tool to Express Myself Currently, the main consumers of VINYL LP is the generation who has not grown up around them in the past. An trend of reliving the past has been occurred, and the corona pandemic has increased the number of in the city searching for hobbies they can indulge in indoors. This has increased the demand for Vinyl LPs. In fact, collecting vinyl has always been a part of culture since the 40s and 50s. However, after the record fair held in 2019, people in their 20s and 30s who could not experience VINYL LP culture began to pay attention. Particularly for the 2030 generation, who are accustomed to digital, VINYL LP has presented as a format that is not accessible, but the despite the inconvenience of trying to obtain certain LPs, the search is what has become attractive – to find that elusive LP. Consumers are figuring out which records to buy, whether by looking at the records directly at a brick-and-mortar shop, or to order online. In addition, you have to carefully open the purchased records, as scratches may occur which can be troublesome. There¡¯s a lot of work in order to manage them well, but many enjoy the 'preciousness of discomfort.¡± MZ Generation and VINYL LP Due to popularity, the number of singers who have recently released an album have also increased their production of LP versions. You can now satisfy your desire for a collection by actually seeing, touching, and owning records from your favorite artist. For example, popular singers such as Taeyeon, Baek Yerin and Black Pink released LP versions and some are even rarer to find and can be high priced. The cultural trend of those in their 20s these days is to go to hip places and leave memories. Entering a vinyl LP bar also plays a role in this hip sensibility, and when you enter it, you can feel a wonderful atmosphere and have a great experience LPs being taken from the bookshelf and as your song request is being played. Listening to music from the turntable is attractive to the MZ generation. Film Cameras: The Film Price is the Gold Price The reason why people are enthusiastic about film cameras is because of the 'analog feeling'. In recent years, the demand for film cameras has increased xponentially. Relatively inexpensive disposable film cameras are also gaining great popularity. The film camera of course was used by our parents' generation a long time ago, but it¡¯s another trend that is resurfacing among today¡¯s generation. Consumers get the feeling of preparing directly throughout the whole process of, from putting the film in, to going to the photo studio to having their pictures developed. One downside is that although film cameras are great, the development process is tedious. You have to buy a film camera first, then choose and buy the film directly. There are also many types of films, which have to choose and buy directly. If you make a mistake in choosing the wrong film it could damage the entire quality of your film reel. You also have to worry about the battery life of the camera. After taking all the pictures the resulting product could change depending on the photo lab. Increasing Demand Despite the tedious process described above, the reason for the increasing demand for film cameras is 'expectation.' When you put a film in and take a picture, you don't know how the picture comes out. The 'expectation' of wanting to go to the photo studio and scan as soon as possible is what lures the consumer base. In addition film value has risen a lot, so every photo you take is important and you'll begin to expect even more from the pictures you take. Also, even if you shoot the same space, you can capture a sensuous picture peculiar to a film camera, as opposed to a digital camera. Film photography is always exciting, even if it's not what you expected. Movie Considering a typical analog-style movie, one can recall 'The Classic' and 'Architecture 101'. The common impression of these movies is that they have an 'analog sensibility'. People like the visual beauty of the movie itself, but the unique analog feel has the greatest impact. Not only memories, but also sympathy of the same era was drawn, and the sensibility of analog and the first love that penetrates the era was well drawn. Author¡¯s Opinion Many people are enthusiastic about going analog. In order to recieve the happiness that analog gives, we will spend 'inconvenience' and consume our 'time¡±. This will soon be our precious memory. Regression instinct is accepted by the established generation and created anew by the younger generation. With a new reinterpretation of the old rather than a simple imitation, we can be excited about ditching our digital ways at times and embracing an analog life. Tamed by General Opinions By SOHYUN KIM From the very beginning as children, we grew up in an environment that was heavily influenced by various factors. Such factors help to form the ¡°I¡± self, and the innate traits inherited from the DNA of the parents become the present self. As the child spends more time outside of parenting, enters school, and forms another group in the society in which that child participates, the child¡¯s thinking and mannerisms begin to become homogenous with the group. Furthermore, as they included small but large categories of age, gender, university, company, and country, people in the same group have similar characteristics. For example, the more time you spend at home, the more your political affiliation becomes aligned with your family. Also, if there is a group I am a part of, my it can be similar to that group. It stands to reason that the more we have contact with others, the more often the formation of our own subjectivity is influence by others. For example, at one point, a majority of people may have owned a pair of Apple AirPods from 1, 2, 3, and the Pro series that were initially considered expensive and odd-looking. Despite the oddness of the product, many people were waiting in droves to own a pair upon release. Participating in this type of craze is the generation most wisely using the benefits of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including new digital devices and online platforms. Therefore, what we can observe in this phenomenon is the power of influence from online public opinion and information. Online public opinion has already entered our daily life. Recently, many parents give their children a smartphone or tablet pc to distract their children or to give themselves a break from meticulously supervising them, so from an early age, children are exposed to indiscriminate information from various platforms. Due to situations like these, there is an advantage of being exposed to various opinions and it is easy to acquire information and knowledge early. However learning in a unilateral way can deprive children of the opportunity to form their own biases. The initiative to determine what is needed, learn how to live, and design the future becomes the child's subjectivity and sets the foundation for determining their self identity. When I grow up and someday leave my group, what kind of person could I say I am? Could I be sure that my opinions have been established on my own due to the flood of information I¡¯ve received from social media and technology? Concurrently, this is also becoming a psychological problem for job seekers or college students taking non-face-to-face classes these days. Humans are animals that live together, but we need to cultivate the strength to take root in the ground on our own.

The Kangnam Hakbo June 01, 2022 No. 378 Kangnam University Newspaper 3 Focus on Short-Form By SUBIN JUNG Why do people spend their leisure time with short-form contents? Short-form is an artificial word of ¡®short¡¯ + ¡®form¡¯ and means a short video within 10 minutes. It is consumed in a variety of areas, including personal hobbies, marketing strategies, and other particular professions. Immediate Video As soon as we see the short video, we can get rid of the curiosity we initially felt from viewing the title. When you see the ¡°Charlie Puth¡¯s hot farewell song¡± video, the highlight section starts immediately without having to wait for the introduction of a song. ¡°Put the gochujang bibimbap in the waffle machine and press it¡± video is also same applying to the image. Viewers do not have to wait long for material setting time or the process of baking gochujang bibimbap. This is because the filmmaker effectively included the process of making gochujang bibimbap and the process of baking it in a waffle machine within a short time of one minute. Vertical Format Short-forms produce footage using 3: 4 and 9:16 aspect ratios. You don't have to turn the screen, and you can quickly turn over the images you don't like. This breaks out of the stereotype that 'the image must be horizontal format'. Attention of the 1020 generation Generation Z, which has been exposed to smartphones since childhood, is familiar with mobile devices. In an era of data floods, they quickly find it boring to onsume long content. Therefore, a new trend of fast and fast is being formed. Not only do they enjoy short forms, they also create them directly. Short form is a play culture that can be easily produced anytime, anywhere as long as they have a smartphone. The beginning of short form: TikTok Chinese IT company ByteDance launched 'TickTok' in September 2016 as a global version of 'DOUYIN'. Thanks to ByteDance's strategy of acquiring and merging Musical.ly overseas, TickTok was able to grow rapidly in the international market. It provides the ability to create and share short videos within 60 seconds. Nowadays, most groups such as BTS and Jessi employ short form as a natural technique when they release a new song. In 2020, BTS started the #LifeGoesOn Challenge through TickTok, which fans all over the world were enthusiastic about. Fans answered with a short-form video to enjoy their daily lives to the song 'Life Goes On'. As a result, the music video of 'Life Goes On (ARMY ver.)', which contains clips of the fan created short form videos, has been released. YouTube Shorts The YouTube channel 'One meal a day' uploads a short cooking video of 3-5 minutes. Viewers can easily follow it, and subtitles can easily include only the necessary information to show the process quickly. Detailed recipes are summarized through the explanation column. The video of 'Easy Cooking Egg Stir-Fried Rice Making' on the above channel recorded 98.02 million hits. Also the YouTube channel 'Big Sis' uploads short videos of various exercises categorized by body part and location so that anyone can easily try them. You can enjoy enough exercise at home without going to the gym. Some people think that in this short of amount of time, there¡¯s not enough content to move or inspire people¡¯s hearts, however if you can relate to the viewer and create of lots of fun, laughter, and emotion for many seconds, it will be a successful short video. Together Again By PROF. LONNIE COLEMAN Things seem to be back in full swing at Kangnam University as students have begun attending classes again. After two years of being apart due to covid, there¡¯s an air of togetherness and newness as we can all face and meet each other around campus. Let¡¯s enjoy this time and continue practicing proper safety measures to ensure a great semester at our campus!

Kangnam University Newspaper June 01, 2022 No. 378 4 The Kangnam Hakbo Student Column THE ADULTHOOD HUSTLE By NAKAYIZA HOPE LETICIA Adulthood is every child¡¯s dream. Becoming an adult is different for everyone. For some young people, it can be living on their own or going away to college. For others, it can mean starting their first real job and becoming financially independent. No matter what the circumstances are, becoming an adult means taking responsibility for your life. ¡°I spent my whole childhood wishing I were older and now I'm spending my adulthood wishing I were younger.¡± (Ricky Schroder) When we were little, we dreamt of not having to live in our parents' house, not being told what to do, or having someone to answer to. We just wanted to live life our way. We got excited when we were told that we could have the freedom to do whatever we wanted when we grew up. Even if that is one of the best parts of adulthood, it¡¯s not as nice as it sounds. As an adult, you are accountable and responsible for the consequences of all your actions. You don¡¯t need a parent to give an excuse or fix your mistakes, because that is for kids, and you are an adult now. You have to fix your troubles yourself. ¡°The secret to adulthood is that 99% of the time, you actually know the right thing to do. Adults make it hard when they are deciding whether to do the right thing.¡± (Jason Kander) Adulthood comes with these huge expectations of you from everyone around you, and the pressure to catch up with them keeps you on your toes. It¡¯s easy to lose sight of what you actually think is right for you. As a child, you have time to do anything you want, without caring about the expectations of anyone. As an adult, everything you do matters, every compromise you make, no matter how trivial, is a risk that you just hope turns out great, otherwise, it might have long-term consequences. As an adult, you must become more knowledgeable and consequently more morally responsible. ¡°Part of adulthood is searching for the people who understand you.¡± (Hanya Yanagihara) How easy was it to make friends as a child? As an adult, you discover that good people and bad people are usually the same people. The bad people look just like the good ones and you now know that people aren¡¯t what they seem to be sometimes, so you have to watch out for them to protect yourself. Finding people that match your energy just right is quite tough at times. It¡¯s an intense, difficult, and yet exciting journey. You get to enjoy first-hand the fruits of your hard work. You decide when to have fun and when to focus because you know what is at risk. You have the power to make and break the rules you follow because you know what is best for you and are working towards that. You also get to realize that you have a right not only to be right but also to be wrong. Trying different things, collecting experiences boldly, and enjoying your journey make it beautiful. We¡¯re often told that no one has it all figured out, everyone is just doing their best, and there is no 100% right way to do it. I hope you remember this when the pressures of this life hold a firm grip on you. We are all new to this, and I hope that you will take a deep breath and relax. You got this. The Time that Will Never Come Again By MOSES YOO If I divided life into two parts, one would be a life and circumstances that we can change and the other, we cannot change. First, when I say a life that we can change, it means our living environment, professions, and even our nationalities can be changed. When I mentioned a part of life that doesn¡¯t, I¡¯m referring to death. No matter how hard we try to change it or develop technologies to avoid it, it is inescapable, and a hard fact of life is that we all will eventually pass away. Conversely, there are things that we cannot change in life and time is one of them. It seems like there is no end, but actually every moment is passing and we can also never stop or rewind it. That is why time is precious and I want to use the most of it and cherish every single moment. My last semester at this school is coming to an end. Soon, I will graduate. At first, graduation was something that I couldn¡¯t mentally grasp, but since it¡¯s right there at the door, I feel like I want to get out of here as soon as possible. However, at the same time, I somehow feel regret looking back the days in the campus — thinking about what would happen if I could rewind the time, and how I could have lived a better life on campus. Actually, I started to feel this way from several weeks ago. I entered school late ( at the ag of 24), and so I thought I should work harder and study harder to follow other college students. Also, I always thought to myself ¡°What should I do next?¡± I tried to do time management, self-improvement, future planning, etc. so hard, and as a result, I earned several scholarships and won first place, which I¡¯ve never had in my life, in my department. Nonetheless, it didn¡¯t bring me joy. If it did at any point it was fleeting at best. It gave me a short moment of happiness and satisfaction and I had to press myself again, while asking the same question from before. Then one day, the last semester came to me. As usual, I tired to do many things without a break. After a several weeks, online classes became offline one by one, and I got to come to school for the first time as a transfer student. It was so good to see other students in classes, and it was good to see the professors that I¡¯ve only seen online(I wanted to press the 2x fast-forward button as usual, though). Well, due coming to school in person, I discovered that I really wanted to feel and enjoy every single moment. At that moment, I realized that many years have passe and a lot of time was spent with a lot of worries about my future. Additionally, I realized that those years spent would never return again. After that, I decided to focus on the present and I wanted to relieve myself. Surprisingly, this changed mind and attitude gave me a better things than when I focused on the future. The boring classes turned into interesting classes, and useless homework became useful while I started to expect that I might gain something precious from the present. Maybe a lot of us are just letting go of this moment in time rather than enjoying it, due to fear of the unknown. Whatever it might be, if you think you¡¯re fearful, why don't you try and put those worries down and accept whatever the outcome would be and make the most of what¡¯s already given to you? As for myself, I don¡¯t want to make the same mistake in the past, for this time will never come again.
